Human Growth Hormone:

If ever there was a “Master Hormone”, it is Human Growth Hormone or HGH.  Responsible for every aspect of life, HGH peaks at age 20 and declines 14% per decade.  Aging and loss of function of every organ system correlates with falling levels of HGH as we age.

In a landmark study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1990, Dr. Daniel Rudman and his team of researchers at the University of Wisconsin demonstrated the remarkable effects of HGH on Men over sixty years of age.  With no other changes in their daily routines, HGH alone increased lean muscle (8.8%), decreased body fat (14.4%), increased skin thickness (7.1%), increased vertebral bone density (1.6%) and improved many other “normal” signs of aging.  Multiple studies published since Rudman’s work have demonstrated these results were no fluke.

Unfortunately, conventional medical wisdom views this decline as “acceptable” and rather than try to maintain more youthful levels of HGH, physicians and scientists treat the signs and symptoms of HGH decline and aging with prescription drugs with many adverse effects.

HGH, a small protein-like hormone similar in structure to insulin, is secreted in very brief pulses during the early hours of sleep.  The body transports much of the HGH to the liver where it is converted into a more stable compound called Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 or IGF-1.  Since it is more stable than HGH, IGF-1 is what is measured in the blood to reflect HGH levels.

HGH must be present throughout life at low levels in order for the body to function adequately.  Cell replacement, tissue repair, healing, bone strength, brain function, organ integrity, enzyme production, immune function and the integrity of hair, nails and skin are some of the areas that require an adequate supply of HGH.

Many factors affect HGH levels and HGH replacement may not be necessary.  Correcting other hormone imbalances, reducing chronic silent inflammation, weight reduction, nutritional modifications and regular exercise will all raise HGH/IGF-1 levels.
